Sometimes she felt like she was blood running through the city's veins, its pipelines, its choppy vertical and horizontal and hidden diagonal intersecting streets. She felt, too, like the city was her lifeline. It is what kept her own blood pumping. It was ingrained in her skull and the wiring of her brain, in her limbs' bones.

On nights when she could feel her hip bones jutting out just enough on her sides in bed; when she would stare down at her legs and see little knees so knobby they had almost become their own entity, she was lonelier than ever. The more exposed you are, the closer you are to your actual insides being exposed, out there, the more isolated you become.
